Abstract

In close electoral races, electoral strategies have to be sophisticated to increase the probability of reaching the targeted constituency. We document a strategy in Poland to increase voter turnout in circumscriptions prone to vote for the incumbent party—a contest for fire trucks in small towns. By using a battery of design-based empirical approaches, we demonstrate that the strategy might have significantly contributed to the incumbent’s close presidential election victory.
