Call for Papers: SIOE Conference 2021

The Society for Institutional and Organizational Economics (SIOE) studies institutions and organizations, largely but not entirely from the perspective of economics. In 2021, SIOE will hold its 25th annual conference online during Thursday, June 24 through Saturday, June 26.

There will be four plenary sessions: keynote addresses by Melissa Dell (Harvard) and Ekaterina Zhuravskaya (PSE), a Presidential address by Tore Ellingsen (SSE), and a panel of past ISNIE / SIOE Presidents on “What Would Coase, North, Ostrom, and Williamson Want Us to Remember?”

There will also be parallel sessions composed from submitted papers. The deadline for submissions is Thursday, February 25 (in any time zone). Submission details are below.

In an attempt to accommodate participants from a range of time zones, the conference presentations will occur both (a) during roughly 11:00-16:00 ET on all three days and also (b) during roughly 18:00-22:00 ET on Thursday, June 24.

The broad (and somewhat overlapping) topic areas for submissions are:

1. Governance within organizations

  • Such as motivation & incentives, communication & decision-making, delegation, management practices, organizational culture, structure, corporate governance

2. Governance between organizations

  • Such as formal contracts, relational contracts, alliances, procurement, vertical integration, lateral integration, franchising, hybrid organizational forms

3. Polycentric governance (Ostrom, AER 2010)

  • Such as communities, cooperatives, common-pool resources, associations, leagues, organized crime, treaties, networks, social movements, collective action

4. Institutions and organizations in the public sector

  • Such as bureaucracy, legislatures, political parties, constitutions, courts, federalism, public-private partnerships, regulation

5. Institutions and organizations in political economy

  • Such as autocracy, transition, reform, corruption, rule of law, property rights, enforcement of law

6. Culture and institutions

  • Such as religion, slavery, race, gender, media, norms

7. Institutions and organizations in economic development and growth

  • Topics such as those above, in low-income and/or weakly institutionalized settings

8. Law, in the study of institutions or organizations

  • Topics such as those above, from the perspective of law

9. Political Science, in the study of institutions or organizations

  • Topics such as those above, from the perspective of political science

10. Strategic Management, in the study of institutions or organizations

  • Topics such as those above, from the perspective of strategic management

Submission details:

• Electronic submission through the website below is the only means of submission.
• Submission of complete papers is encouraged but not required. Unpolished drafts are more likely to inform the committee than are lengthy abstracts.
• Submitting a paper indicates the submitter’s intention to present the paper. Of course, events may intervene.
• An individual may submit only one paper. No individual may be a co-author on more than two submissions.
• To help the committee assemble the program

  • submitters should please indicate which one (or, at most, two) of the ten broad topic areas above is most appropriate for their paper, and
  • submitters should please indicate their availability to present during one or both of time blocks (a) roughly 11:00-16:00 ET on all three days and/or (b) roughly 18:00-22:00 ET on Thursday, June 24.

• Submitters of accepted papers will be notified in early May.
• All papers presented at the conference will automatically be considered for the Oliver Williamson best-paper prize.
